Hundreds of youth detained in Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 5  (Agencies): Indian police have arrested hundreds of youth, most of them teenagers, in Srinagar under various false cases during the last two weeks and lodged them at different police stations. The Indian police and paramilitary troops have launched a crackdown and arrested over 500 youth, who participated in protest demonstrations in Srinagar against the recent killing of 11 young boys in indiscriminate firing by Indian troops on peaceful protestors in Srinagar, Sopore, Baramulla and Islamabad areas.” More than 100 youth were detained in police station Parimpora for participating in Sopore march, last week. The arrests were made on June 27, 28 and 29.However, due to space constraints in Parimpora police station some detained youth were shifted to police station Pantha Chowk,” Indian police sources told media men in Srinagar. Most of the arrested youth belong to the age group of 13 to17 years. The cases of the detained youth are being pleaded by the lawyers including Ghulam Nabi Shaheen, Mir Shafaqat Hussain and Rafiq Joo.“Most of the detained youth have been charged of offences which amount to life imprisonment,” said Ghulam Nabi Shaheen.Meanwhile, the High Court Bar Association of occupied Kashmir in a statement in Srinagar strongly condemned the unabated killing and arresting of civilians in Kashmir by the police and paramilitary troops.
