Srinagar, Apr 6: Rejecting the offer of Union Home Secretary, G K Pillai, senior Pro-freedom leader and Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani Tuesday said that Azaadi was the ultimate solution of the Kashmir issue. In an interview with a wire news agency, Union Home Secretary, G K Pillai had said that the Indian government was holding back-channel talks with the pro-freedom leaders on the Kashmir issue and anything less than independence was negotiable. ‘We are telling everybody please tell us what you feel is achievable. We have no fixed, closed mind. The government of India is open. Total Azaadi (independence) - no government would be ready to say yes. Anything below Azaadi - we are open to negotiate on that.' Pillai had said in the interview. Reacting sharply to Pillai’s statement, Geelani said that the people of Kashmir were not asking for something new or unreal. The people of Kashmir, he said, offered numerous sacrifices over the last six decades not for autonomy, self rule but for complete freedom. “We’re asking India to fulfill the promise made by late Jawahar Lal Nehru as Prime Minister. No less than Azaadi is acceptable to the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said. “Our Martyr’s have not sacrificed their lives for autonomy or self rule. We’ll not let their sacrifices go in vain,” he added. Urging India and Pakistan to realize the ground realities and solve the Kashmir issue according to the wishes and aspirations of the people, Hurriyat Chairman said that peace will not prevail in the subcontinent unless Kashmir issue is solved peacefully.
