Islamabad, Apr 10: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani today assured the world community and the nation that the country's nuclear assets are in safe hands.
He was talking to newspersons at Chaklala airbase in Rawalpindi before his departure for Washington to attend the US-sponsored Nuclear Security Summit, beginning on April 12.
''We have 30 years experience of handling the nuclear programme,'' Mr Gilani said.
The Prime Minister said he had also taken up the matter before the National Security Committee of Parliament and it totally endorsed the safety of the nuclear programme.
Leaders from more than 40 countries along with the UN Secretary General and Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency have been invited to participate in the Nuclear Security Summit.
The Summit is aimed at evolving a consensus on securing nuclear facilities and materials around the globe.
''The Prime Minister’s participation in the Nuclear Security Summit would be his first engagement in an international forum dealing with nuclear issues after assuming the Chairmanship of the National Command Authority (NCA),'' Foreign Office spokesman Abdul Basit said here.
US President Barack Obama, in his Prague speech in April 2009, had announced to host a Global Summit on Nuclear Security. He had identified nuclear terrorism as the most immediate and extreme threat to global security.
He had announced to launch a new international effort to secure all vulnerable nuclear materials around the world within four years to prevent it from falling into the hands of terrorists.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Masood Khan, has been designated as Pakistan's Sherpa (focal point) for the Summit. He along with his team of experts actively participated in the preparatory meetings held in Vienna, Washington DC, Tokyo and The Hague. The preparatory meetings finalised the draft CommuniquĂ© and the Work Plan as two outcome documents of the Summit.
The programme of the Summit includes an exclusive kick-off dinner, two formal plenary sessions and a working lunch for the participating Heads of Delegation.
Mr Gilani will be one of the lead speakers at the inaugural dinner being hosted by the US President on April 12 for the Heads of State/Government participating in the Summit.
''As a nuclear weapon state, Pakistan is cognizant of its special responsibilities and attaches highest importance to the security of nuclear materials both for civil and military use,'' Basit said, adding that Pakistan has developed and put in place multi-layered fail-safe mechanisms for the safety and security of its nuclear assets.
The Prime Minister will also hold bilateral meetings with Mr Obama and other world leaders on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit. (UNI)
