Safakadal youth succumbs to his injuries at SKIMS

SRINAGAR, June 19(KMW): Mohammad Rafiq Bangro, a youth who was injured in CRPF beating at Safakadal, succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS late this evening.

Twety six-year-old Rafiq was critically injured when he was beaten with gun buts and lathis on June 12 outside his home at Safakadal. He was removed to SKIMS in a critical condition. There was no improvement in his condition during last seven days and it continued to deteriorate.

Reports of his death were doing rounds for last several days. But both police and doctors were denying the reports.

However, late this evening the police confirmed his death. The body was not yet handed over to family for the last rites. "Rafiq's body is still lying in SKIMS. The authorities are likely to go for an autopsy of the body before it is handed over to the bereaved family," sources said.
On the day when Rafiq was thrashed by security men and cops, the people of Safakadal said he may not survive because he had received serious head injury. They stated that the youth was not involved in any protest demonstration or stone pelting and that he was innocent but was attacked by the security men.

Demonstrations were held at Safakdal this evening as the news about the youth succumbing to injuries reached there. Raising pro-freedom slogans, they were demanding registration of murder case against guilty cops and punishment to them.

During last several days the family had approached police to register a case against the guilty security men. But the cops refused to do so.
Te affected family members and their relatives held a protest demonstrations at Press Colony here some days back against the refusal by police to register the case.
