Srinagar, Aug 21: Days after Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah offered truce to the angry youth in view of the holy month of Ramadan, state police on Saturday launched a major crackdown in Bemina area of city outskirts arresting at least 35 youth on the charges of stone pelting.
The crackdown triggered off violent protest resulting in injuries to at least six people.
Reports and eyewitnesses told KMW that a contingent of Special Operations Group (SOG) personnel joined by CRPF troops this afternoon laid a siege around Nund Rishi colony, in the city outskirts and launched a crackdown against the alleged stone pelters.
The crackdown continued for nearly two hours during which the forces allegedly barged into residential houses and misbehaved with the women folk. At least 35 youth were picked up by the forces during the crackdown.
Interestingly, CRPF troops recorded the proceedings in the area.
Some of the youth arrested by the joint team of police and troops have been identified as Tajamul Farooq, son of Farooq Ahmad Niyazi, Mohammad Yaqoob, son of Abdur Rehman Dar, Bashir Ahmad, son of Habibullah Lone, Firdous Ahmad, son of Ghulam Mohammad Fizoo, Mubashir, son of Bashir Ahmad, Adnan, son of Ghulam Nabi Kawa, Zaid Mehraj, son of Mehrajuddin, Tanvir Ahmad, son of Bashir Ahmad Shujoo, Mohammad Iqbal, son of Mohammad Yusuf Kalai, Mukhtar Ahmad, son of Ghulam Ahmad Misgar, Sahil Ali, son of Ali Mohammad Bhat, Tahir Magray, son of Abdul Qayoom Magray, Wasim Khan, son of Nazir Ahmad Khan, Sahil Farooq, son of Farooq Ahmad, Ishfaq and Owais, sons of Nazir Ahmad Bhat, Amir Ahmad, son of Mohammad Yusuf Dagga, Bilal Ahmad, son of Ghulam Mohi-ud-din Sheikh, Mohammad Umar, son of Mohammad Ashraf, Arif and Amir, sons of Mohammad Rafiq Hajam, Sajad Ahmad, son of Mohammad Abdullah Lawdari, Showkat Ahmad, son of Nazir Ahmad Bhat, Shabir Ahmad, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Bhat, Mohammad Rafiq, son of Ghulam Mohiuddin Sheikh, Shahid Yaboob, son of Mohammad Yaqoob Makaya, Mudasir Ahmad Bhat and his son Younis and Imam of Masjid-e-Umar, Molvi Mashook.
The crackdown and the arrest of the youth brought hundreds of people, including the family members of the youth on the roads.
Shouting slogans, the people protested the arrest of the youth.
CRPF and police, eyewitnesses said resorted to cane charge and burst tear smoke shells to disperse the protesting family members of the arrested youth.
Superintendent of Police (SP), South, Irshad Ahmad said that the drive was conducted to round up the youth who were fomenting trouble in the area.
