Srinagar, 19 Aug 2010: The hostile armies of India and Pakistan exchanged heavy gun fire in Krishna Gati (KG) sector of Mendhar in Poonch district, officials told Press Bureau of India Thursday.
They said Pakistan Rangers in another ceasefire violation, fired rockets, mortars and opened heavy machine gun fire on Kranti Post, Ravi Post and Kripan post along the line of control (LoC) in KG sector of Mendhar during the intervening night of August 18-19.
Army’s 17 Mahar, officials said retaliated to the ‘unprovoked’ firing by the Pakistan Rangers. The exchange of fire between the two armies continued for over two hours. However, no reports of any loss of life were received.
"Pakistan Army violated the ceasefire agreement by attacking three of our forward posts in Krishna Gati sector of the district around 0050 hours.
They fired mortars, rockets besides heavy machine gunfire on our positions,” Brigadier General Staff (BGS), 16 Corps, Brigadier S Dua said.
“Our men returned the fire. The exchange of gunfire continued for over two hours,” he added.
However, sources said that a group of at least twelve heavily armed militants managed to sneak into this side of the LoC as the two estranged armies were engaged.
The militants, sources said had a brief stay in Nakki Gyada village along the LoC before fleeing.
“No militants have infiltrated into this side. It was a ceasefire violation,” Dua said, adding “Army was fully prepared to tackle the infiltrators,”
