Oppression brings shame to Govt: Mirwaiz

Srinagar, Aug 21: Strongly condemning the use of force on peaceful demonstrations across the Valley, the Mirwaiz Umar Farooq-led Hurriyat Conferene Saturday said the government was only bringing shame upon itself by subjecting people to a policy of “barbarity, oppression and aggression.”

Terming the arrest of a local Imam, Moulvi Mashooq Ali and 40 other “innocent” youth  during a crackdown by forces in Nund Reshi colony, Bemina  as an act of frustration, the pro-freedom amalgam expressed concern over reports of Station House Officer, Safa Kadal police station harassing pedestrians including women.

“On one hand the government by imposing stringent curfew has held the entire population hostage while on the other these acts of harassment are being used to instill terror among the local population,”  a spokesman said in a statement issued here.

The spokesman also condemned the house arrest of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to prevent him from addressing a religious gathering at the shrine of Naqshband Sahib in old city’s Khwaja Bazar area today.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said, thousands of people continued pro-freedom demonstration in the Chenab Valley.

A huge pro-freedom demonstration was led by Qari Liyaqat Ali Bhat in Doda yesterday in which people reiterated their support to the freedom movement and condemned the use of brute force against innocent Kashmiris, the spokesman added. “People are also keen on Mirwaiz Umar Farooq visiting Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and other areas of the Chenab Valley,” the spokesman said.
