Srinagar, 19 Aug 2010: A Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed and two policemen injured when militants attacked the residence of ruling party legislator in Sopore town of Baramulla district Wednesday evening.
Reports and eyewitnesses told KMW that militants last evening opened heavy fire towards the Dangerpora residence of National Conference legislator from Sopore, Haji Mohammad Ashraf Ganai.
The security guards returned the fire sparking off fierce encounter.
In the exchange of fire that continued for at least fifteen minutes, one SPO was killed while two policemen suffered injuries.
The slain SPO has been identified as Farooq Ahmad (200/SPO), son of Abdul Khaliq Wani of Peerniyan, Uri.
The injured policeman Mushtaq Ahmad (Belt No 211/SPR) and Nisar Ahmad (Belt No 188/SPR) were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Their condition is said to be stable.
The militants managed to flee from the spot after engaging the security guards in encounter.
“I was in Srinagar when my house was attacked. My wife and my son were present there,” Ganai said.
“This is the third attack by militants this year. I don’t have adequate security,” he added.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Sopore, Altaf Khan said that an SPO was killed and two policemen injured in the militant attack on the NC leaders house.
“We have registered a case and started further investigations in this regard,” Khan added.
